Croatia is a beautiful small country situated on the Adriatic coast. It is first country in the world that offers to all visitors and tourist possibility of having free and comprehensive Croatia travel guide on mobile phone called mobiEXPLORE Croatia. It is available prior to your arrival in Croatia from official web site mobiexplore.com. You can search among plenty useful info about history, culture, gastro offer, accommodation and shopping offer, daily weather forecast and events in cities, interactive detail city maps with street indexes for easier search, audio guides for major attractions,...and much more. It is available like Flash application for symbiam phones and even over mobile portal (Wap) - in this second case you have to write in browser mxcroatia.com and use it online. If you have Flash compatible mobile phone you can download it and use more frequently.
Besides its natural beauty, it also offers: a unique history, a unique mixture of cuisines, many internationally recognised hotels and helpful individuals.

Zagreb is the capital of the country. It may not attract as many visitors as the coastal towns of Rijeka or Split or Zadar or Dubrovnik but is well worth a visit. There are many museums in town and at night there are lots of things going on.

The Croatian coast is among the most beautiful in the world. It has unique cities like Split with its Diocletian palace or Dubrovnik which was the rival of Venice for centuries, great beaches and more than 1001 islands to choose from. By one hour ferry from Split, you can reach the island of Hvar - the sunniest island of the Adriatic, which has also been elected one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world by traveller (edition 1997).

Don't forget a visit to Cavtat and the Koravle Valley. Cavtat is an ancient Epidaurum city just south of Dubrovnik, near the airport. Stone houses go up from the picturesque bay. A great place to base your trip to Croatia. Koravle Valley is rich in farming and folk culture. Sundays are a chance to visit the village of Cilipi, renowned for their traditional folk dances.

Plitvice is Croatia's most famous National Park. Its many lakes and waterfalls are ideal for hiking or trekking around. The Dalmatia region is full of untouched nature and thousands of islands. The island of Ciovo is only 25 kilometers from Split and is connected with a bridge to Trogir, a small town under the protection of UNESCO. You might wish to visit this fantastic town, as many celebrities did before you (Bernie Ecclestone, Albert Grinaldi, Gwyneth Paltrow, Armani and many others).

Don't forget Fazana and the islands of Brioni! Just a bit north of Pula... You may not see them on a map, but it was the summer home of Tito (his choice of all Yugoslavia) and farther back the Caesars during the Roman empire (even farther back, stone age man and before him dinosaurs. You can still see the footprints in stone!) Think about it... with all of Italy why choose to live here? That's right!

The Pre-Croatian Period If we were to judge by the caves existing in the area, like the Bajan Cave , we can be certain of habitation as far back as the older Stone Age period and it is also assumed that The Cro-Magnon man lived here 13 thousand years ago. From the later Stone Age period, there is material proof of the existence of a pre-Illyrian culture and civilisation in the area. In the older Bronze Age, there is evidence of Illyrian tribes. Copper objects found in the area are proof of an intensive lifestyle. Some walled settlements on the higher points, so-called "gradine" more..

<a href="http://www.splitmap.com/ name="Split">Split</a> is the economic and administrative center of Middle Dalmatia, with about 200,000 inhabitants.

It is also the jumping-off point for exploration of the coast and islands of the beautiful Croatian Adriatic. The site was first settled when, at the end of the third century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here.

The importance of Diocletian’s Palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation and the buildings of succeeding historical periods built within its walls, which today form the very heart of old Split.

Split’s growth became particularly rapid in the 7th century, when the inhabitants of the destroyed Greek and Roman metropolis Salonae (present-day Solin) took refuge within its walls. The lovely ruins of Solin outside the city can still be explored today. In the Middle Ages, Split was an autonomous commune.

Komarna is on the Croatian coast 70 kilometres North of Dubrovnik. All the holiday villas and apartments have a clear view of the azure Adriatic Sea beyond the beach.

The village lies in the bay of Mali Ston engulfed by the mainland and the peninsula of Peljesac whose coasts are dotted with small uninhabited islands, reefs and cliffs offering a spectacular view much like Southern Thailand or Greece.

Komarna is the perfect place for making a vacation if you want to be disturbed by nothing but the sound of rattling palm leaves and soft waves rolling in on the beach. There is no chance of getting bored though. Just three kilometres to the South you'll find the tourist town of Klek offering a wide selection of restaurants, bars, shops and discotheques, and there are a lot of historical sights nearby and world-class tourist attractions to be easily reached in a day-trip.

On the Komarna web site you can find information on the village and surroundings which include the ancient Greek colony of Narona in Neretva Valley, the holy place in Medjugorje and the world heritage site of Dubrovnik one hour drive to the South. And you may find accommodation for a great family holiday or senior holiday.

Komarna is just off the main North-South highway (E65) that cuts along the coast. It is about 70 km. North of Dubrovnik and 120 km. South of Split. Coming from the North take note of the "km stones" there is a small road leading down to Komarna on your right 700m after the stone with km 733.

If you are coming from inland (Metkovic) turn left in Opuzen towards Dubrovnik and follow the instructions as if you were coming from the North. Coming from the South you'll pass through the tourist town of Klek. Notice the "km stones". Three km after Klek there is a small road on more..

_____________Economy
Edit This

Economy—overview: Before the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the Republic of Croatia, after Slovenia, was the most prosperous and industrialized area with a per capita output perhaps one-third above the Yugoslav average. The economy emerged from a mild recession in 2000 with tourism, banking, and public investments leading the way. Unemployment remains high, at about 18%, with structural factors slowing its decline. While macroeconomic stabilization has largely been achieved, structural reforms lag because of deep resistance on the part of the public and lack of strong support from politicians. Growth, while impressive at about 3% to 4% for the last several years, has been stimulated, in part, through high fiscal deficits and rapid credit growth. The EU accession process should accelerate fiscal and structural reform.

The botanical gardens at Trsteno North of Dubrovnik were founded in 1492 by the Gucetic-family who resided in the splendid 15th century summer residence in the centre of the gardens until it was nationalised by the communists.

However urged by a will they could not describe all of them came back the next day individually and she revealed herself to be The Holy Virgin.

Rab Paradise beach

Rab Paradise beach

Tourist Community of the Town of Rab

Besides official nudist resorts and beaches, you can enjoy in numerous other hidden little coves or bays, many of them reachable only by a boat, where you can enjoy total privacy for a day or meet other nautical naturists. Even on the clothed beaches in the area, it is common to see nude use.

Brac is the highest and third largest island in the Adriatic. Pine forests, olive groves, and vineyards are plentiful. Traditional seaside pleasures are to be found in the numerous bays, on sandy and gravel beaches that form the long and well-indented coast of Brac.

The beaches have something special, particularly the Zlatni Rat beach - their gravel promontory shifts from side to side as the wind and waves constantly change their shapes. Interesting note: The white stone of Brac has been used in many famous buildings, including the White House in Washington, DC.

On the southern side of the island, near the village of Bol, world famous sandy beach "Zlatni Rat"( Golden Horn ) is located. In the near coves and bays many sandy and pebbled beaches can be found.

One of the most known is Paklina FKK beach. It is located at the western end of the famous "Golden Horn". Snacks and drinks at the textile beach (approx. 200 meters). Both, the naturist and the textile beach are well attended in the high season. Naturist section is pebbled and if you like more private places, keep walking to the west where some nice small pebble and rocky coves can be found.

Because of the winds, Bol is famous for windsurfing, so if you are a windsurfing fan, this could be the place for you. Other naturist beaches on the island can be found on the east coast, between Supetar and Sumartin.

Along the coast between Postire and Sutivan villages, on the northern side of the Brac island, you can find dozens of small bays and coves with beautiful scenery and natural beaches. One of them, little and hidden cove called "Mutnik", not far from a small village Mirca, is reserved for naturist sunbathers and it is a genuine tourist diamond. It is easy accessible by car since there is a 23km long road between Postire and Sutivan.

The island of Rab has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Croatia. Two the most popular are Paradise beach and Sahara beach, both in Lopar settlement. Paradise beach is a 2km long beach with a long shoal and with many facilities, from water sports to catering facilities, bars etc. A perfect place for families with small children, but not only them.

Sahara is not far from Paradise beach. It is shaped like a lagoon and it is a so called "free beach", meaning clothing is optional. It is a fantastic place for naturists. There aren't more..

Komarna : There is a pebble beach just south of the village 300 m from the centre and it is safe for small children. You may also swim directly from the rock beach that runs all the way along the coast. Small children must be supervised at the rock beach.

If you have a lot to carry you may drive a car to the beach. It is possible to park there – unless you come late on Sundays where the place can be rather crowded. The road to the beach continues and if you turn left in the T-junction you will come to the main costal road close to Duboka (do not turn right, more..

The klapa music is a form of a cappella singing. The word klapa translates as "a group of friends" and traces its roots centuries back to litoral church singing. The motifs in general celebrate love, wine (grapes), country (homeland) and sea. The main elements of the music are harmony and melody, with rhythm very rarely being the most important. There are no words to describe these marvelous sounds echoing on the small square in Omis, the St. Michael's square. Those who have not experienced it can hardly imagine it. The Bacina Lakes at Ploce is one of the most spectacularly beautiful sights in Croatia. The six semi-linked lakes that lie about half an hours drive North of Komarna are visible from the coastal road. They more or less have the same colour as the brochures advertising diving trips to The Maldives.

The lakes are a favoured spot for the locals so it's possible to buy food and drink. Remember to bring your diving glasses. It's not The Maldives but there is an abundance of fish in the water anyway.

From the majestic Velebit Mountains to the graceful Krka waterfalls, the five national parks in this region make Biograd a unique destination.

Biograd is the gateway to the Island of Pašman . The western coast is exemplary of a pristine mediterranean landscape. Visit the medieval monasteries, rural villages, vineyards and olive groves, ideal for eco-tourism. Nature hike or drive to its highest peak, Bokoj. The effort is rewarded by a stunning view of the Dinaric Alps to the east, and a myriad of tiny Kornati islands to the west. In the poetic words of George Bernard Shaw …"On the last day of the Creation, God desired to crown his work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath …".

The Dalmatian coast, with 1000 islands to explore, is simply described as a sailing paradise. You can drop anchor where you please, fish, or take heavenly swims in the myriad of deserted & picturesque bays, far from the tourist masses. Undisturbed sea flora and fauna is the perfect invitation for scuba diving and snorkeling. Karlovac was founded in 1579, but the parish was already mentioned in 1334. Around it grew an important cultural, commercial and industrial centre. Still, the main reason to come are the sacral buildings of the town, including the early Baroque church of the Holy Trinity.

The national shrine of St. Joseph on Dubovac is of particular interest. This modern church began to be built in 1968 and was consecrated in 1975. It was officially designated a national shrine in 1987. The main nave (33 x 17 m) is oriented towards the white marble shrine. The statues of St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary, cast in plaster, are the work of the academic sculptor, Ante Starcevic. Equally striking are the pictures of Croatian saints and blessed ones dating from 1985, as well as the picture of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the country, dating from 1988 - works by Prof. Danko Butala. The aisle of the shrine (17 x 17 m) is also dedicated to Croatian saints and blessed ones. The church has a steeple with three bells weighing 980, 520 and 297 kg. The most important pilgrimage occurs on 19th March, St. Joseph’s Day.

The Island of Vis is the most distant and western of the larger Dalmatian islands, with an area of about 90 km2. This is a tourist oasis of untouched beauty, full of history and wild mountain scenery, crisscrossed with donkey tracks.

Vis produces some of the best olives, figs, almonds, lemons in Croatia, and can rival anywhere in the Mediterranean for it's tasty fish and lobster, prepared the same way as the ancient Vis fishermen used to do. There are also many vineyards (some of which were first planted by the Greeks as early as the 4th century), which produce some popular Croatian wine; Plavac is a strong heavy red and Vugava a rather rich white wine.

Komiža - is the island's main fishing port, a compact and intimate town with a palm-fringed seafront on one side and a ring of mountains on the other. Dominating the southern end of the harbour is the Kastel, a stubby sixteenth-century fortress which now holds a Fishing Museum . Rearing up above KomiÏa to the southeast is Mount Hum , at 587m Vis 's highest point. There's a wonderful view of the Adriatic from the top, with the pale grey stripe of the Italian coastline far away to the west, and the mountains of the Croatian mainland to the east.

Notable sandy beaches on the island are those at Milna and Stoncica, a narrow inlet cleft in the rock with warm, aquamarine water, and Srebrna where the large, flat, pale stones give the place its name ('silvery').

The city of Kraljevica is located at the south edge of Bakar bay is easter part of Kvarner, near the point where the island of Krk is closest to the coast; 26 km south of Rijeka on the road towards Zadar. Kraljevica lies in the Vinodolski channel, at the entrance to the Bakarski bay, on a slightly inclined slope, in an area of favorable climate. The city is located at a very good natural harbor point. It is populated in 15th century, and at first named Portorium, meaning the "customs place", latter corrupted to "Porto Re" - royal port, or in Croatian version which is in use since early
17th century - Kraljevica. The roads from inland reach the coast at this point, and in middle 18th centry a military shipyard was build here. In the 1993 reform Kraljevica lost status of a city (bacame community), but it was regained in 1997.

The coat of arms of Kraljevica is already mentioned in pre-WWI sources, so it must have been granted by Austrian emperors. It was recently (re)adopted, together with the accompanying flag. The coat of arms in canting, refering to the Italian name of the city: Azure, an Anchor Or ensigned by a Crown.

Since the 19th century, it has been a famous tourist destination with luxurious villas and swimming beaches. The sandy and pebble beaches on the Ostro peninsula are the main tourist attractions, while the nearby bays of Scott and Dubno also have wonderful beaches. A well-equipped campsite surrounded by pine trees is not far away. Kraljevica is easily accessible from all directions and we recommend it to families with children and, due to its favorable climate, to those with respiratory problems and allergies. Besides the swimming beaches and the diverse gastronomic specialties, Kraljevica also offers a variety of sporting activities and entertainment: sailing, diving courses, water sports, many cultural events and much more.

A trip to the waterfalls will be one of your vacation's absolute highlights. Apart from offering spectacular scenery it's a great place to fish (especially for children with nets) and it's an even better place to swim.

The cold, clear water falls into a small valley. From noon onwards (when the sun gets hot) some of the water particles being hurdled into the air vaporise putting a lid of mist on top of the valley making it a pleasant shade-like feeling to be there.

Getting tired of relaxing on the sandy beach you can head out into the pool of water which is also covered by a sandy bottom. If you are up to it you can swim across the pool (notice how the water gets colder and colder), climb the rocks and jump. This is what the local teenagers do to impress one another (and perhaps the girls as well).
There is also a restaurant where you can enjoy the view and relax by listening to the rumbling from the waterfalls. There is just one problem: The falls are very difficult to find unless you have a local to lead the way.

The Neretva Valley is an area where tribes, nations and their armies have fought for dominance since the beginning of time. The trade routes have gone through Neretva Valley since prehistoric time. Those who controlled the valley and its many robbers and pirates could control the trade for all of presentday Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Neretva River emerges beneath Zelengora Mountain in eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina. Through canyons, cliffs and hollows in its upper and middle courses, it forces its way through the Dinaric

Alps to spread downstream of the village of Pocitelj in Hercegovina over a vast wetland valley and to flow through its large delta into the Adriatic Sea.
Neretva is this largest river of the eastern part of the Adriatic Basin . It has been harnessed and controlled to a large extent by several hydroelectric power-plants and their storage lakes, but it still remains unique in its beauty and the diversity of its landscape.

The Lower Neretva valley contains the largest and the most valuable remnants of the Mediterranean wetlands on the eastern Adriatic coast and one of the few areas of this kind remaining in Europe .

The valley has a rich monumental heritage witnessing the presence of man in this area for thousands of years. Turning of wetland into fertile land and establishment of transportation routes to the hinterland created the conditions for the development of settlements. Many prehistorical fortifications and settlements are scattered on high and low grounds along the Neretva River . This area seems to have been inhabited by Illyrian tribes as far back as in the Iron Age. In the 4th century B.C., the Greeks founded an emporium (port) here, which developed into the well known market town Narona, today Vid near Metkovic. All over the delta around Narona there were suburbs and estates the remnants of which are now covered by the marsh and deposited sediments. Many monuments from the Roman time are present, too, such as city walls with towers, Roman villas, mosaics, epitaphs.

The medieval monuments are few. During the Turkish invasion at the end of the 1400’s, several churches were destroyed and the memory of those times is kept alive by the fortress Norinska Kula situated at the mouth of the small Norin River into the Neretva River . Due to frequent wars in this area, no significant monuments from the time of the City/State of Venice have been left.

Peljesac peninsula is the second largest in Croatia, located in south Dalmatia in immediate proximity of Dubrovnik. Natural beauty on Peljesac still stands against commercial and urban values.

Peljesac is 85 km long, 358 square km in size, and has about 8000 inhabitants. Although it's attached to the Croatia mainland - making it easy to reach, it has all the characteristics of typical Dalmatian island, in natural beauty and the way of living. As it was commercialy neglected for years - it stil have beauty of unspoiled nature, crystal clean bays and traditional villages - being one of the rare tourist resorts in Europe which still can fully express the Croatia tourism tagline: Mediterranean as it was.

Although it's interesting as a whole, and in all of it's aspects - there are several extraordinary things making Peljesac what it is. It's nature and beautiful beaches - which can be enjoyed at any part of peninsula. Peljesac maritime tradition which you can still feel in Orebic - the town of captains. One of the best windsurfing spots in this part of Europe - Viganj, and, certanly not the least important - Peljesac wines - famous red Dingac, Postup and other sorts of Plavac mali - which absolutely should be tasted if you are visiting this part of the world.

The Slovenian coastline is so small and Piran is a tiny port across from the Italian border. Not noted for high quality hotels, it is pretty and the fish restaurants offer excellent fresh food at minimal prices. Probably worth an overnight if like us you caught a ridiculously cheap Ryanair flight to Trieste and are on your way to Rovinj.

Tourism in Rab goes back to the 19-th century. But Rab got its spot on the map when the British King, Edward VIII stayed there with his great love, the American Wallis Simpson. They say that he was the first to go swimming without any clothes. This is how nudism was founded on Rab. Rab is one of the islands richest in forests with as many as three hundred springs of water.

Rab gets really busy in the summer months of July and August, this can be just the right place for you if you're looking for great bussy summer time. For quieter times, visit the island in June and September. temperatures: end of May/ June: air 23-28, sea 18 degrees mid June/ mid July: air 30-34 sea 18-24 July/ August: air 30-45, sea 24-28.

Rab is enchanting and sharming place to visit, quiet and real hide-away in the off-season and really active and noisy place in the summer season.

Attractions in the old town Rab include many churches dating 11. to 16 century, particulary remains of St. John's Basilika ( 5 ct.), St. John Evangelist bell tower ( 12 Ct.),

Waterfront, Rijeka

TC

With its 150,000 inhabitants, located on an area of only 44m², Rijeka is the third city in Croatia. On the basis of its turbulent history and rich cultural heritage, Rijeka created its recognisable identity as an open city, a multinational and multicultural centre, in which tolerance, understanding and coexistence have a special meaning and value.

Rijeka has a convenient geographical and traffic location, on the spot where the Adriatic went deep into the European continent. Today Rijeka is a city of intensive development towards the tertiary or service activities. However, Rijeka intends to keep its typical economical activities, such as port activities, shipbuilding and oil processing industry. Special attention has been paid to the communal infrastructure, sustainable development and ecology. It is with pride that I can say that Rijeka is one of few cities from the East Adriatic Coast, which solved the problem of sea protection from pollution after the erection of Waste Water Treatment Plant.

However, the true value of Rijeka lies in its inhabitants, people open and friendly towards foreigners, people who speak at least one foreign language and for whom communication with the world is a major part of their everyday work.

Apaartmetns Vitaljic - terrace in shade

Ivica Dajak for Croatia Holidays

Trpanj and surroundings are environmentally pure areas. There are no industrial plants on the entire peninsula. This eliminates the need for big ships to visit our shores, so a risk of pollution is down to the minimum.
You can find many beaches in and around Trpanj. These beaches vary in size and composition - some are sandy, some are stony, some covered with gravel, and some cemented (flat) - but all are being cleaned daily! Nearby pine forests give that special Med aroma to the sea air and necessary shade for sensitive skin. Some beaches feature a cafe! Please see the gallery of Trpanj beaches! Families will enjoy special facilities for kids: very shallow sea on the "Luka" beach and jungle gym in the Pine Park in the Town Center.

Trpanj has solid sports facilities, including a soccer/rugby field. Many sports teams are our returning visitors.

One of intriguing features of Trpanj is a visit to our old St. Rocco Church. It is situated on the top of the hill with the same name. To get there one needs to climb a marble staircase of a few hundred stairs - each with a name of a faithful benefactor chiseled out in marble.
From here, popular walking path will take you "around the sea"! Well, that is how we call that beautiful part of Trpanj - a pathway that runs next to the sea, through pine and cedar forest. Stunning views, air that reeks of pine needles and cedar resin, peace and tranquility - it's a spiritual journey of self-discovery.

Other facilities Trpanj can offer:
- A separate nudist beach
- Diving school (special offer for the guest of "Katic" Apartments)
- Sports grounds - a solid soccer / rugby field

For those with rheumatic, female and/or similar problems, Trpanj can offer a unique blend of medically tested and proven sulphur-hydrogen rich sea-mud. This unique mélange is available at a particular inlet ("Blatze") that receives no wind and no waves from the open sea.
Blatze healing sea-mud belongs to peloid group. When these healing powers of sea-mud are combined with tranquility of the surrounding, Blatze part of Trpanj coast becomes an ideal place for healing, relaxation and rehabilitation.

St. Nikola, Zaton

St. Nikola, Zaton

Marko Peros, Zaton
Zadar, is a three thousand year-old town. It was the capital of Dalmatia for many centuries. The Zadar peninsula still preserves the ancient street grid of the town, as well as a Roman forum dating back to the first century AD. The pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donatus dates back to the ninth century, and it is undoubtedly Zadar's most famous site. However, the town is also renowned for having the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Croatia, such as the Cathedral of St. Anastasia (13th century), the Church of St. Chrysogonus (12th century) and the Bell-tower of St. Mary (1105).

The town is fortified with thick walls, renowned for their impressive ports, such as the Harbor Port and the Mainland Port, which date back to the sixteenth century. The walls encircle the Square of Three Wells, the Square of Five Wells, the Municipal Loggia, the Municipal Guard Tower and many palaces that slumber under the protection of the town's four patron saints: St. Simon, St. Anastasia, St. Chrysogonus and St. Zoilus.

Throughout history, Zadar was the center of important cultural events, such as the establishment of the first Croatian university (1396), the writing of the first Croatian novel (1536) and the publication of the first Croatian newspaper. The world famous Permanent Exhibition of Sacral Art and the traditional St. Donatus Musical Evenings represent only a small part of numerous cultural events and manifestations that Zadar offers to its visitors.

The waterfront is an ideal place to admire a beautiful sunset or to visit its rich and colorful green fish markets, which are always bustling with life.

Zadar region is also know for the nearby islands beginning with the largest: Pag, Dugi Otok, Ugljan, Pasman, leading to the smaller ones: Silba, Molat, Olib, Premuda, Iz, Vrgada, Sestrunj.

Politica

L'organizzazione economica croata è attualmente post-comunista.

051-666100, 330899; www.jadrolinija.tel.hr).
